Q&A: Do I Need to Take a Multivitamin?

Q: Is a multivitamin supplement really necessary for me to reach my goals?

A: The issue of taking a multi, and whether it is really needed, is one that rages on in the fitness community. Some people say you don’t need one at all, some say it is an absolute requirement. So do you really need one? I’ll offer up my own opinion on the matter.

It seems that there is a compelling amount of evidence for the need and efficacy of using a multi. According to Wikipedia, in 2002, the Journal of the American Medical Association recommended that all adults take a multi, and that inadequate intake of several vitamins has been linked to the development of several diseases, such as cancer, heart disease, and osteoporosis.

It really is very difficult to get all the nutrients you need in your daily diet. Besides, let’s face it – most people don’t eat really well all the time! And I know when I take a multi, I just tend to feel better – I have more energy and feel more alert. Really, it’s a small price to pay for some ‘nutritional insurance’.

So … we probably need to be taking a good multi. But – not all of them are created equal! So what to look for in a multivitamin? First off, we want to make sure the multi contains at least the recommended daily allowance for the 13 essential vitamins (A, C, D, E, K, B12, and 7 B-complex vitamins). Absorption is also an important issue, which is something many cheap brands lack – what good is that multi doing you if it doesn’t get absorbed properly?

Recommendation for one I use personally:  Universal Animal Pak is a great one for everything you need and a little extra:

Universal Animal Pak - Winner of the Bodybuilding.com Multi-Vitamin Of The Year Award for 2006 & 2007!

You can also find lots of other good quality and affordably priced multis via the same link.  Hope you found this information useful!  Now go get that multivitamin!
